MONTENEGRO
Location
Montenegro is a small, but very mountainous country on the Adriatic coast, between Croatia and Albania and opposite Puglia, the heel of Italy. Montenegro is very accessible being less than 3 hours flight from most of Europe and Russia. There are two main airports; Tivat and Podgorica distanced 15km and 60km from JAZ APARTMENTS, but many travellers also use Dubrovnik airport in Croatia, which is just 14km from the Montenegro border and 70km from JAZ APARTMENTS. Airlines operating scheduled flights at Montenegrin airports can be found here.
Natural Beauty
You may think were biased but we believe that Montenegro is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. However, we are not the only ones. Back in 19th century, Lord Byron wrote At the birth of our planet, the most beautiful encounter between the land and the sea must have happened at the coast of Montenegro. When the pearls of nature were sown, handfuls of them were cast on this soil. Montenegro still retains its natural charm and beauty. Architecture dating back to the 12th Century is still prevalent among the many UNESCO heritage towns and villages. Montenegros natural beauty is dramatic; mountains dropping down to mirrored water in the UNESCO heritage Kotor bay and the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic lapping the sandy beaches of the coast. Although the gulf of Kotor is commonly referred to as a fjord, it was not formed by glacial movement and is in fact a ria (a drowned river canyon), but is by common consent, spectacular. Drive into the mountains to find undrowned river canyons (the Tara canyon being the second deepest in the world), glacial lakes, untouched nature and a fledgling ski and eco-tourism industry. On the coast, the climate is Mediterranean rising to 40 degrees in August, but cooler inland where the climate is Continental.

Jaz Beach is one of the three great potentials of Montenegrin seaside. It is situated in the Mrcevo field as its background with the seasonal Drenovstica River running through it. It is from both its sides protected by the hills of Grbalj and Straza. The beach is 2.5km away from Budva on the way to Tivat. There are two parts of this beach, one is 500m long, and the smaller one which is used by nudists is 300m long. The beach is pebbly on the side of Grbalj hill and it becomes sandy in direction of Straza hill. The sand gives the water a wonderful turquoise shade. In the background of the bigger part of the beach, in the Mediterranean vegetation and greenery, there is a campsite with the capacity of 2000 sites. This beach is a protected natural area of the first category.
The island of Sveti Stefan was first referred to in period documents in 1442. Then inhabitants escaping from the Turkish menace moved to this place and built a small village into a picturesque environment. The fishing-village located on a rocky island lost its population in the 1970s. Then the Yugoslavian government improved the occasion and set up one of the most famous hotel islands of the world. The simple fishing-houses of Sveti Stefan changed into sumptuous set of rooms, villas and luxury apartments.
The 80s were the golden ages for Sveti Stefan. Statesmen, rich businessmen, crack players and famous film stars frequented this place for a summer holiday. "The villa number 118", the daily rent of which came to 1500 USD, was a legend that time.
In the last few years, wars on the Balkans retarded the reputation of Sveti Stefan in the world and the number of foreigners visiting the island decreased. Rich guests discontinued visits although the level of the services on the hotel island remained the same as in its gold ages.
Those who do not want to stop at a villa can just walk around the island. Anybody is permitted to step on the island on payment of the entrance fee. The island is fascinating not only seen from a distance but walking among its buildings too. The whole island is nearly a flower-garden. Walking among the well-kept parks we come across the one-time stone fishing-houses in which apartments satisfying all requirements hide now.
Sveti Stefan got its name from the St. Stefan church standing on the highest point of the island. The picturesque and unusual architectural environment gives a special atmosphere and a unique outside to this place. An open-air swimming-pool and a bar are available for temporary guests.
"Just as if I have returned to town from the most beautiful fairytale of my childhood."
(Sophia Lauren, Italian film star)
Kotor that has 15.000 inhabitants is the most beautiful town in Montenegro and the best-preserved medieval settlement of the Mediterranean region in Europe. This town is the "sea gate" of Montenegro. Kotor was built where the black mountains and the Adriatic meets in an especially nice natural environment. This part of the bay has the best situation for the town of Kotor.
Although the town had already been inhabited by the Romans its present appearance developed in the 12-14th centuries. Kotor was devastated by the tempests of history as centuries brought numberless foreign rules and fights there. Venice had, however, the largest effect on its architecture. Walking in the narrow streets of the old town we get to spacious squares suddenly, just like in Venice. Though the Balkans of course has an effect on Kotor, its atmosphere is really Mediterranean. Such a special and perfect mixture of the characters of the Balkan and the Mediterranean areas can not be found anywhere else in Europe.
We can get into the old town -- located inside the walls of the former castle -- through a Venetian lion gate. We are amazed immediately by the several hundred years old buildings which are under the protection of the UNESCO. There are churches, former palaces, decorated balconies, narrow alleys and thousands of architectural beauties there.
The citadel is towering several hundred metres above the town and it takes half an hour walking to get up there. A lovely perspective opens before our eyes from the desolated citadel: it offers the view of the Bay of Kotor for the most part, the town of Kotor and Mount Lovcen.
Kotor is a real gem of not only Montenegro but the whole Adriatic region as well. The town is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful settlements in South Europe.
Budva is the most popular seaside resort of Montenegro and is worthily famous for its sandy beaches and medieval old town. Budva is one of the oldest towns on the Balkan Peninsula since it was already referred to in the Greek mythologies. According to the legend, a certain Cadmo founded the town after that his father, "Phoenician King Agenon" turned him out of Thebes.
The old town of Budva was built on an island in the 9th century. But later the narrow firth that separated the island from the mainland was silted up in the course of time and became a peninsula. Budva was under the jurisdiction of Venice from 1455. The town was destroyed and rebuilt several times in the past centuries. Its present appearance developed after the enormous earthquake of 1667.
Budva makes a home for bustling life every summer. Festivals and concerts entertain the inhabitants and the tourists there. Budva has the infrastructure that is needed to welcome foreign guests. Various accommodation facilities are provided there, from simple guest-houses to hotels. A great number of restaurants with intimate atmosphere and elegant shops afford possibilities for relaxation on the coast and in the old town. Furthermore, long sandy beaches allure the holidaymakers to stay.
It is a speciality that the old town is separated so much from the new districts. The winding streets and flag-stony squares of the old town that is surrounded by a wall still raise a medieval atmosphere. A chief attraction of the old town is the St. Ivan church built in the 7th century. The church makes room for some icons of Venetian artists and a library storing up curiosities. A special attraction of the town is the St. Trinity church (built in 1804) since being used by both the believers of the Eastern Church and the Catholics too.
The 1749 metres high Mount Lovcen -- the holy mountain of the Montenegrins -- rises directly above the Bay of Kotor. From the peak, in a bright sunny day, a small part of the bay is visible and what is more sometimes we can see as far as Italy. Lovcen, however, is not just a mountain of Montenegro. Lovcen is a holy mountain. This means the same to the Montenegrins than the Olympus to the Greeks as it is the meeting place of Gods according to the legend. There is a wonderful round panorama on top of the mountain. The highest peak in the coastal zone of Montenegro is of course a part of a national park of 6220 hectares territory. We can see special surface forms there.
The mausoleum of Petar Petrovic Njegos built of limestone and granite can be found on top of Mount Lovcen. It was Njegos's last wish -- the greatest ruler of the Montenegrins who was a bishop and a poet at the same time -- to be buried there. The big statue in the mausoleum was sculpted by Mestrovic. The statue was getting dusty for a long time in a store-room but later it was carried up to the peak with the help of big haulers and winches.
A serpentine interlarded with hairpin bends leads to the top of Mount Lovcen, so it is possible to get up there by car. It takes a few minutes climbing the stairs to arrive to the mausoleum and the look-out tower.
"I want to tell you something about Lovcen, about a beautiful Montenegrin hill. The first thing that emerges in front of you, that is it; the first spoken Montenegrin word is its name; the first step on the Montenegrin soil is the stone of the Lovcen mountain. Wherever you go, you can see it; it is a polar star for Montenegrins." (Ljubomir Nenadovic)
Durmitor is the highest and one of the most astounding mountains in Montenegro. The national park of 320 km2 territory was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. There are 17 glacial lakes in the karstic mountain that are called "the eyes of the mountain" by the people living there. The mountains in turn are referred to as "the country of small lakes". Black Lake, located directly at the entrance of the park, is the most famous one. The lake is covered by ice in winter but we can swim in it in summer. Its name originates from the surrounding dark native pinewood. The mountain range of Durmitor consists of limestone thus karst forms prevail on the surface. The ice-age, however, left its mark on the territory too: the peaks are crenulated, steep, and tower-like, valleys are deep and wide.
It is almost all the same if we visit the Durmitor Mountains in winter or summer, our excursion will surely be rich in experiences. We may even take few-day-long hikes in the mountains since there are numerous routes there. We can climb to the highest peak of the mountains -- Bobotuv Kuk that is 2523 metres high above sea level -- without any experience in mountaineering. An Austrian natural scientist (Oskar Bauman) was the first who reached up to the top of Bobotuv Kuk. In winter we can go for a ski tour to the snowy forests and mountain passes of Durmitor or we can have a passion for the joys of skiing on the varied courses.
The centre of the mountains is the small town of Zabljak with 700 inhabitants, located 1456 metres high above sea level. This permanently inhabited settlement is located the highest above sea level on the Balkan Peninsula.
The famous river Tara rises in the territory of Durmitor National Park.
